Irrigation

It is the application of required amount of water to plants at proper intervals. 

Sources of Water

Main Source - Rain

Surface water - Lakes, Ponds, River, Oceans, Sea

Groundwater - Wells, Tube wells, Step wells

Means to minimise water wastage during irrigation 

1.  Use modern methods of irrigation.

2.   Use organic manure that needs less water than fertilizers.

3.  Grow crops according to regions, climate and availability of water.

Modern Methods of Irrigation

Sprinkler System - Plants are irrigated by spraying water on plants like rain by spronkler. 

Drip System - It is popular where there is scarcity of water.
Narrow pipes with small holes at the side of plant root is laid in the field and when water flows through pipe, water comes out in a small amount near the root of the plant. 


Other Irrigation Methods

Canals

Canals are man made waterways originated from river dams . These are used for irrigation, water supply to human and animals and also for navigation.

Rahat

It is a traditional irrigation system.
It is also called water wheel or Persian wheel.
Many containers are fixed on an iron ring and water is pulled up from Wells or Mini Canal, when these wheels are rotated with the help of bullocks .
