Our Solar System

The centre of our solar system is Sun.

All planets revolves around Sun.

There are 8 planets in our solar system .
They are - Mercury,Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

Facts about Planets

Mercury is the nearest planet to Sun.

Jupiter is the biggest planet of our solar system.

Mars is called Red Planet.

Earth is called Blue Planet.

Saturn has a number of bright coloured rings around it.

Neptune is farthest from the Sun.

Venus is the brightest planet.

Venus is also called Morning Star and Evening Star.

Venus is nearest to Earth.

1. Constellations are imaginary outlines or patterns representing an animal or a creature and these are formed by different arrangement of stars in the sky. Example -

2. Galaxy - It is a gravitationally  bound system of stars, stellar remnants, inter stellar gas, dust and dark matter. Our universe is a collection of innumerable galaxies. Our Sun is in Milky Way which is the name of our Galaxy.

3. Orbit - It is the path of a planet in which it revolves around a star. The trajectory path in which Earth revolves around the Sun is called orbit of the Earth.

4. Spacecraft -  A spacecraft is a vehicle or machine designed to fly in outer space. Spacecraft are used to reach other planets like Mars and to launch satellites.

Difficulties faced by Astronauts in Space

1.   Radiation can lead to cancer and other serious health problems while going into space .

2.   Space has no air and astronauts have storage room for oxygen.

3.   Weightlessness occurs due to zero gravity.

4.   Headache or other body problems usually occur and there is none to look after.

5.   There  are many  kinds of rays  in space  as Cosmic Rays which may destroy the spacecraft .

Difference between Aircraft and Space Craft

1.  Aircraft fly in the lower atmosphere while spacecraft fly in space where there is no atmosphere.

2.  Aircraft has Wings to fly while spacecraft does not have wings.

3.  Aircraft is not designed to handle vacuum while spacecraft is designed to handle vacuum of the space.

Rakesh Sharma

Squadron leader IAF officer Rakesh Sharma is the first Indian to go into space. He flew aboard Soyuz T11 spacecraft on April 2, 1984. Two Soviet astronauts Yuri Malyshev and Gennadi  Strekalov  were along with him .
He spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes aboard the Salyut 7 orbital station in space. Rakesh Sharma was born on 13th January 1949 in the Patiala city of Punjab India .
His parents were Devendra Nath Sharma and Tripata Sharma.

Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was an American Astronaut of Indian Origin.
She was born on March 17, 1962 at Karnal (Haryana, India) and died on February 1, 2003.
She was the first Indian woman to fly in space.
In her first space mission November 1997, she along with five other crew members spent 15 days and 12 hours in space but in her second mission January 16, 2003 she flew into space aboard the space shuttle Columbia  but while returning it crashed and all the seven crew members along with Kalpana died on February 1, 2003.
